Town of Brick Houses

I built a straw house—

It was all I had.

Most people had bricks,

some had steel,

some people got cotton—

We all need to build a house.

While people were lathering and stacking bricks

and nailing down sheet metal, I sat and figured

out how to piece and weave this flimsy dead grass.

The house wasn’t large or lavish,

It worked, enough.

It looked ok from the outside, but lacked structure and integrity.

There was no foundation, virtually no insulation.

The cold would easily see its way in and the rain

would find every crack in the roof.

Of course it did.
