Black is the coal miner’s fuel, to provide a family sustenance.

While draped in onyx and jade, black provides a gilded shield from life.


Notes on sheet music sing and sway.

While calculators compute a cold display.


Black suits caged to conformity.

But a biker's leather jacket frees to fly.


Black crowns the newborn’s tuft of hair, marking life’s initial breath.

Until a casket's edge marks the end in death.


Our black canvas gives itself to elevate light.

As stars are only visible at night.
